  1. U.N. Conference Speech

Good evening ladies and gentlemen. My name is Ishmael Beah and I am from Sierra Leone. I am here to share with you my experiences as a child soldier. In Sierra Leone there is a deadly war going on that is taking millions of innocent lives a day. Unfortunately I was taking part in that war. The army took me in as one of their soldiers when I was only a young boy. I was given an Ak 47 on my first day at camp. Shortly after that I was given drugs such as marijuana and cocaine. After my first kill I became desensitized to the horrors all around me. As a result, it made me a heartless killing machine. Eventually I was taken to rehabilitation center and was treated for my physical and mental issues. Now I stand here before you today a changed man. The children in Sierra Leone and many other places need our help. Thank you.
